In my experince the smiling is because: "I have no fucking clue what anyone is saying so I'll just smile unobtrusively."

Now there was this Jamacain bakery in Moss Side that I like to visit in the late 90's. Great bread and lots of smiles but the atmosphere was always a bit tense.

Fucking moss side in the 90’s intense. Yeah I’ll bet.

It still has a reputation now but I’ve never had any issues there.
