I wholeheartedly disagree with this. Calvin's dad is the furthest thing from a Republican

He believes in bike superiority, despises advertising in all its forms, and endeavors to preserve nature. Just because he's a stoicist doesn't mean he's conservative.

Its not attributing the character to the political parties, but the context of what they are saying.

Unless someone can show me the cell, I'm fairly confident that his quote isn't even from the comic. The text appears to be edited.

Every time he talks about building character, it's in regards to facing and overcoming a challenge or difficult circumstances.

If you want to illustrate a point, don't resort to deciet and deception. That will only perpetuate the problem.

Oh, i am not op. And yes the frame was edited, for at least the father saying life being hard built character was kinda stapled on the bottom from a different comic. I don’t think the intention was to slander the characters in the Calvin cartoon. The intention was to show different philosophies the certain political movement as the OP sees them. I do happen to agree though.

I also came here to defend Calvin's dad from slander. If I remember right, Watterson has talked about how Calvin's dad probably most closely reflects his own opinions.

Thanks, you said it better than I would have.
