The Nakba, commemorated annually on this day as "Nakba Day", was the destruction of Palestinian society and homeland in 1948 following Israel's creation. Nakba Day protests take place around the world and have been attacked by Israel.

The foundational events of the Nakba took place during and shortly after the 1947-1949 Palestine war, including 78% of Mandatory Palestine being declared as Israel, the exodus of 700,000 Palestinians, the depopulation and destruction of over 500 Palestinian villages and subsequent geographical erasure, the denial of the Palestinian right of return, and the creation of permanent, stateless Palestinian refugees.

Although May 15th had been used as an unofficial commemoration of the Nakba since 1949, Nakba Day was formalized in 1998 after Yasser Arafat proposed that Palestinians should mark the 50th anniversary of the Nakba during the First Intifada.

The Nakba was a key event in the development of Palestinian culture and is a foundational symbol of Palestinian identity, along with "Handala", a ten-year old cartoon character developed by Naji al-Ali; the keffiyeh, a checkered black and white scarf worn around the head; and the "symbolic key" (many Palestinian refugees have kept the keys to the homes they were forced to flee).

On Nakba Day 2011, Palestinians and other Arabs from the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, Lebanon, and Syria marched towards their respective borders, or ceasefire lines and checkpoints in Israeli-occupied territories, to mark the event. At least twelve Palestinians and supporters were killed and hundreds wounded as a result of shootings by the Israeli Army.

"In resisting the Nakba, the Palestinians have struck at the heart of the Zionist project that insists that the Nakba be seen as a past event. In resisting Israel, Palestinians have forced the world to witness the Nakba as present action; one that, contrary to Zionist wisdom, is indeed reversible." - Palestinian scholar Joseph Massad

disgruntled spice miners on the moons of Naboo

Mace Windu just drops this little lore tidbit and doesn't elaborate. What horrors are the Naboo inflicting on their lunar spice miners? Is Naboo's social democracy funded by extracting profits from prison labor?

What exactly is Zam's plan after she shoots a jedi to death in a crowded bar? Why didn't Jango Fett just assassinate Amidala himself? Why would he use a kaminoan saber dart that can be traced back to the planet he lives on and not just a generic blaster? Why wouldn't he keep shooting the jedi while they were confused instead of just killing Zam and running away? Why was Obi Wan able to sense Zam sneaking up on him with a blaster, but not able to sense Fett sneaking up on Zam with a poison dart?

Man Slave I is a cool ass ship design. In general the visual design in the prequels hits the mark pretty well, the little Jedi fighter with its hyperspace ring, the Naboo starfighter which appears to be as much about looking nice as being practical, the "almost Star Destroyers" used by the late Republic. The only questionable choice is that one boat Anakin and Padme ride in.

Wait what the fuck? This is the only time I've ever been baffled by a music choice in any Star Wars film - but they reuse Duel of the Fates during the brief montage where Anakin is looking for his mother. That's a high energy fight piece, when the script calls for a tense "the clock is ticking" piece.

The middle of this film really drags. I think the problem is that they were hoping for the Obi Wan vs Jango Fett stuff to carry it, but that whole investigation is such a slow subplot that it doesn't really work. Since they're going to merc Jango anyway it would make a lot of sense to clean the subplot up by just having Obi Wan defeat him and learn about Geonosis from his corpse.

I wanna see lockpicking lawyer pick a pair of handcuffs with a bobby pin in his mouth. Maybe politics on Naboo are really cutthroat, which is why she learned how to do that.

What exactly possesses Jango to jump down into the arena? He's set up cozy in the VIP booth just shooting anyone who gets too close to Dooku, then for no reason at all he jumps down and gets his head cut off by Mace Windu.

We will not be hostages to be bartered, Dooku!

As Windu says this Aayla Secura turns around like "wtf he sayin?"

this whole subplot is basically just an extended film noir reference
