It's a reference to an incident with Dan Quayle, who was Bush Sr's VP.

Quayle was at an elementary school and tried to correct a child spelling potato by instead spelling it potatoe.

Dan Quayle's tweets would have been amazing. For the younglings around here who haven't seen his quotes.
