I think the idea that problems are rarely "solved" as much as met with new effort and new forms of their reflections on society has begun to demoralize people.

The abolition amendment was passed right after the civil war, yet the last chattel slave held in the US wasn't freed until after the US had entered WWII.

The fact is that you're never gonna be "done" with whatever crusade you pick up so much as successful enough to be satisfied when you're too old to keep fighting and need to pass it on.

If people can relate personal self-improvement to a lifetime endeavor, it's hard to fathom they can't relate national self-improvement as lifetimes* of endeavor. Yet here we are.
