Even as far back as the first release of iPhone OS, I believe

Nope, as far back as iOS 7.

iOS 6 and earlier had a static clock.

You're right, I can't quite believe they've only added it with iOS 7, though.

I know it took them a while too, because I had to use tweaks on a jailbroken iPhone to get it
