On an earlier article linked from that one:

Seven has not revealed where its newsroom got the name from.

In 2022 another man was wrongly identified as Cleo Smith’s alleged kidnapper by the Seven Network. He reached a confidential settlement in the supreme court of Western Australia.

So there's a history of this kind of bad reporting. You'd think they'd learn.

I hope Cohen made absolute bank from this.

It's a race to get the scoop and breathlessly report names before other news agencies do. This, to them, is just minor collateral damage compared to being FIRST TO REPORT ON THIS BREAKING SITUATION.
