Apropos of nothing: I like watching YT horror shorts, good and bad. Seeing what film students and enthusiasts create is rewarding to me.
I watched a bunch of them yesterday, new ones and ones I've seen already. However, I watched a 30min one I hadn't seen or heard of (somehow), called "The Strange Thing About the Johnsons".
Now this is on me, I should have checked who made it and maybe read the comments beforehand - but I went in blind.
spoilers and content warning
Ari Aster (Hereditary and Midsommar) made it when he was in AFI film school...10/10 will never watch again. If you do want to go ahead and watch it, here are my TW: SA, rape, abuse. It's not shown explicitly, but the whole fucking thing is just acted to perfection, the directing, the cinematography, it's an exceptional piece of art, and touches on subjects that should be discussed more. Apparently, this short was what got him attention and he went on to do the other, more well known, films.
But seriously, I cannot stop thinking about it, because it was so well done, so beautifully and realistically acted, that I feel sick and will never watch it again.
Another short I love is The Other Side of the Box - I think it's 15 minutes and I 100% reccomend it to anyone who is interested in horror. It's just such a perfect little film.
These are my favourite type of horror and also looking forward to Zone of Interest, will start streaming next week (or now if you have VPN)
My kid (teenager) likes horrors, so I’ve been watching with him. IT, Halloween, Get Out, etc, I’m all good, not too scary, I can handle this horror stuff.
Went in blind to Hereditary, and that was, erm, eye-opening. Also watched Midsommer, but didn’t find that as bad. Thanks for the heads-ups on the Ari shorts, don’t think I’ll be going there, lol
