For people wondering what the difference is:

  • Telling the bank your property is worth a lot and simultaneously telling your state it's worth nothing is lying and a crime (Trump)
  • Selling your property for more than the state thinks it's worth is just good business (John Stewart)

Also only one of these guys is running for president.

Like, let's say John Stewart did everything he's saying Trump did. Okay, cool, I won't vote for him to be president either.

If Jon Stewart was even remotely doing what Trump did is also be clamoring for his indictment and standing trial.

I have never told the state what my properties are worth, they have always told me their accessed value and I can try to dispute that number if I want to. Am I missing something here?

Do you run a commercial / residential building in Manhattan? Your 3 br 2 ba house is easy to value from known records and prior sales. They probably don't even visit it.

Every large building on Manhattan is different. The state asseses it themselves but also assumes building owners are not lying in their records. Some well placed lies can easily save millions in taxes. That's what Trump did.

States apparently don't do property assessments?

I think they can and do, but not always super detailed.
