I want to do a Krakoa read through someday but I should read through the Claremont stuff first to understand all the side character history. I read Hellions though and that was pretty awesome on its own.

I heard that Hickman left the x-books over some editorial differences and that he originally wanted to put out cheaper 'X-Men Universe' digests a bit like Shonen Jump but Marvel didn't agree and just put out regular priced trade paperbacks. Also, Kieron Gillen and Al Ewing are good writers and they could have continued doing Krakoa stories.
