I'd like an electric car (no trains here, roads too rough to cycle) but this sort of thing puts me off. Can I not buy a dumb electric car anywhere?

You can convert an old ICE car for like $10k-$20k. Won't have as much range, but at least it won't be an iPad on wheels.
