What is Cyberpunk?

Cyberpunk is a science-fiction sub-genre dealing with the integration of society and technology in dystopian settings. Often referred to as “low-life and high tech,” Cyberpunk stories deal with outsiders (punks) who fight against the oppressors in society (usually mega corporations that control everything) via technological means (cyber). If the punks aren’t actively fighting against a megacorp, they’re still dealing with living in a world completely dependent on high technology.

I watched this again recently after finally reading the short-story it's based on. Even with the author writing the screenplay, it doesn't stand up to the original. It's a smaller story, but that brings the focus on these great characters, especially Molly (aka Jane from the movie). The movie really doesn't do her character justice. Her climactic fight scene at the end really stands out.

I'd encourage anybody to track down William Gibson's "Neuromancer" or "Burning Chrome" (the collection of stories Johnny Mnemonic comes from) if you haven't read them already.

Yeah the wikipedia page talks about how the Gibson and the director wanted to make a small-budget ironic art film, but the studio wanted to make a blockbuster: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_Mnemonic_(film)

Just read that in the x-post in another community. That all makes sense, and was missed opportunity.
