there's a big march madness gundam character thing going on, and paptimus scirocco (says he's in favor of a matriarchy but it's just so he can creep on women, gets owned by the first transgender gundam pilot) is up against harry ord (respects women a lot, is actually constantly fighting for a matriarchy, is very chill with the second transgender gundam pilot)
harry also has the cooler gold mobile suit and is just generally incredibly cool and you should watch turn a gundam

but like, you get what i mean. kamille is out there punching cops for misgendering him and getting super defensive over his name being a boys name, and getting called a lesbo by his school bullies for hanging out with his girlfriend. like, that's not up to interpretation at that point, even if it wasn't tomino's intent
and loran gets told "we have to forcefem you for the mission" and basically goes "oh boy, time to get forcefemmed :D i can do a super good girl voice and i'm going to learn how to get good feminine posture and get lots of dresses" and never once does anyone make a shitty joke about it even when loran says it wasn't really a disguise
those are on very different levels of being transgender in the show
also yeah the misogyny in zeta is so much. victory gundam is even more misogynistic and gender essentialist* but honestly it wraps back around to being kinda better about women than zeta because it commits to every single woman being batshit and just fucking goes for it. it helps that i think it's just a much better show than zeta, so i'm willing to forgive it a little more (though i still hate the gender stuff)
*when reccoa started saying terf shit before joining the fascists i was like "is this tomino knowing this terf shit is fash, or is this just a women be crazy thing? impossible to know" but tomino just used to believe the things she was saying about gender. victory is full of stuff about women being predisposed to motherhood or whatever. of course, there's no way he still believed that by turn a, which is nice because it meant that show was GOOD about gender instead of either bad but interesting or just bad like all of tomino's earlier gundams. turn a is full of genuinely compelling stuff related to gender roles and how they restrict women, and how identity is fluid and how class relates to gender and stuff like that. really good stuff, and the fact that it ends with none of the women turned into housewives and almost none of them dead is practically a miracle when you consider how most tomino women end up one or the other
Oh damn yeah turn a will be fun to watch
it's one of those shows where everything comes together perfectly and it just all works. the yoko kanno ost is one of her best, the animation is gorgeous and the way it uses early computer effects is fantastic and works super well, the writing is sharp and complex without you needing to take notes*, the characters are compelling, it all just works so well
*a genuine problem in victory, where if you don't take notes you won't have a fucking clue what's going on when the different enemy factions start fighting each other over tiny differences
Applies to G-Reco, too, lol. At least the TV version, I haven't seen the 5 movie version yet
lmao i am super excited for the pod to get to g-reco so i don't have to take those notes myself, i can just see the discussion and ask the occasional question in the discord if need be
It's a pretty entertaining show to just vibe to (and it's really pretty), but yeah, it'll be nice to hear other people talking about it and catching stuff I missed.
everything i've seen is so pretty. i love all the designs and wish there was a g-self mg. the fact that age has like 6 master grades while g-reco has none and ibo has one is a crime. there are 5 separate wide release master grade sinanjus! where's a barbatos lupus or g-self! or anything! please! no more unicorn/unicorn adjacent or seed gunpla, there have been enough!
Two if you count the SDMG, but that's another Barbatos.
I agree on wanting more varied shit, though. Seeing the recentish RG Evangelion and HG Votoms (and I think I saw some L-Gaim stuff?) kits has me holding out hope for more varied stuff. Some of the G-Reco designs got new HGs through some of the Build shows, but it's a tragedy that SEED sells so many toys.
that's true, but i don't think duplicates should count even if there as different as the mgsd and the regular mg
yeah they did an l-gaim, but it was just mild improvements over the original 80s kit. but they did brand new ones for dragonar and vifam. dunbine is getting a full new line that's done the dunbine, sirbine, and virunvee so far. all of them are p-bandai exclusives of course, but still more in the way of fun variety
