Cw: fish

On the 2nd of march 1964, a group of indigenous rights activists, among them actor Marlon Brando and Puyallup tribal leader Bob Satiacum, illegally fished in the Puyallup River to protest the denial of treaty rights to Native Americans. This form of civil disobedience is known as a "fish-in", and in this specific incident both Brando and an Episcopal clergyman were arrested.

The fish-in was staged by the National Indian Youth Council, a Native American civil rights organization formed in Gallup, New Mexico in 1961. It became part of the so-called "Fish Wars", a set of protests spanning decades in which Native American tribes around the Puget Sound pressured the U.S. government to recognize fishing rights granted by the Point No Point Treaty.

The protests eventually won indigenous people in the area the right to fish without state permits - in the 1974 case "United States v. Washington", U.S. District Court Judge George Hugo Boldt stated that treaty right fishermen must be allowed to take up to 50% of all potential fishing harvests and required that they have an equal voice in the management of the fishery.

The so-called "Boldt Decision" was reaffirmed by the Supreme Court in 1979 and has been used as a precedent for handling other, similar treaties.

CW: mental health sadness stuff including self harm and suicidal ideationapparently having any criticism of redditors as a category or using 'treat brain' discourse is the same as being a fucking nazi. judging people based on their choices and lack of pursuit of education outside the mainstream and relationship to capitalist media is the same as judging them based on ethnicity or race i guess. i fucking hate this, i can't even trust my closest friends to be on anywhere near the same page as me. i am at the height of alienation. i can't trust anyone around me. i want to die. i have been hitting myself and thinking of suicide for the past hour or two. no one understands, no one around me has been listening to a single fucking thing i've ever said. i thought i was making progress. communism is impossible in america. i just want the nukes to fall to wipe out our ignorant fucking nation.

the cringeposting is coming from inside the house in this case unfortunately. they are better on like every other opinion including china palestine and ukraine, but suddenly i'm a nazi for using the phrase 'treatbrained' and being critical of how people engage with media. and like of fucking course i'm super pissed off to have the things i'm saying (what i consider to be well thought out critiques of capitalist media and culture, if delivered in crude internet irony lingo) to what nazis would say. it's like if i called an SA victim an abuser because they said they hated abusers and predators because hating people based on one particular category (even if its something they CHOSE TO DO) that applies to them is what makes you a nazi apparently. i need to calm down but its hard when you are a queer communist being called a nazi by someone close that you trusted to have better takes than that.
