TBF, Willy Wonka's chocolate factory in the movies did leave the child contestants in tears too (not to mention improbably alive in some cases). So maybe this botched experience wasn't that far off how it should have been.

Edit: also, I wouldn't be too surprised if an unspoken plot point for the oompa loompas was that Willy had them hopped up on meth.

He does solely pay them in cocoa beans and I'm pretty sure you can get high off of cocoa beans if you consume enough and oompa loompas are dramatically smaller than humans, so yeah he's paying them in drugs to live and work in his factory, after he smuggled them from Loompaland.
