Can't wait in 20 years for them to look at Donald Trump nostalgically and say he had a "charming wit" as God-Emperor Satan wins yet another GOP primary.

Unpopular opinion on Hexbear, but I don’t think Trump will ever get that nostalgic W treatment. W is a special case. The reason W was evil was because Iraq. Liberals in the mid 00s, after the invasion really started going bad for the US, had some vague notion that the invasion was bad. It wasn’t from some principled anti-imperialist or even just anti-war stance. It was largely because it wasn’t quick and easy as promised so it was making America look bad; and liberals just internalized that feel as “Iraq war bad”.

But once W left office and the US wound down quite so direct involvement in Iraq, liberals lost their anger over the war because it wasn’t actually based on anything. Lose your anger over the war, and you lose your reason to hate Bush.

(That said, there were plenty of left liberals who were against the invasion from a principled stance back in 2003. But those kinds of libs aren’t the one who are impressed with W and Michelle Obama sharing candy or whatever, tbf).

I don't think Trump will get the W treatment, but not for the reasons you describe. There was still Afghanistan in W's case, but W was only different from the typical politician in the sense that he leaned into the idea of being a dope to avoid looking like a carpetbagger. Beyond that, W very much comported with what was expected of a typical Republican. Trump is too offensive to liberal sensibilities on a much more visceral level. I really struggle to imagine them ever warming up to him on that basis alone.

I agree on that point, if no one else does. Trump isn't really redeemable from a lib perspective because he shatters their fundemental belief that the US is a meritocracy. They need that illusion. Thats why they had to invent RussiaGate thats why they idolized Mueller, and why they all know what a Lev Parnas is (i have no clue).

Bush tested their faith on that - not because he killed over million Iraqis - but because he was dumb and sounded dumb. But, they could live with it because he was a Governor and went to Yale (credential bullshit). He stole an election the civil way, with lawyers and the Supreme Court. And civility is the iey here.

Bush could be redeemed because he was civil. Trump was far less destructive in office than Bush was to the world, but he was too rude. Libs only understand tone
