Military berets used to be bigger and provided some shade, but in modern times they’re used because they’re cool. Really the SAS made them popular in culture and now they’re associated with elite units as a status symbol. I’m not sure about African nations history with using them, but I assume it’s just colonialism and the elite status from before.
