IIRC these are the first proper deaths caused by military intervention in cross strait relations since at least 1979.

I would not be surprised to see China retaliate and retaliate aggressively, particularly since Taiwan's Coast Guard alleges that the incident occured "near Kinmen," which is a staggering 3 kilometers away from mainland China.
