Apparently paint corrodes the steel as well.

I would assume that depends on the type of paint you use.

Sure that's why they have special chemical pre-processing and special primers, then weather coating for car bodies

For paint you need to use a brake fluid spray rather than the above mentioned peroxide, vinegar and salt solution.
