A U.S. source denied there had been any official contact and said Washington would not engage in talks that did not involve Ukraine.

So this is just complete bullshit intended to undermine Ukraine's sovereignty by falsely suggesting the US is negotiating for them.

Russia knows Ukraine won't willingly cede territory to Russia. Russia is banking that - at some point - Ukraine's Western partners will start to pressure Ukraine to accept Russian terms. Russia is banking that - at some point - the West will run out of patience and money for arming Ukraine if Ukraine proves incapable of dislodging Russian troops from Ukrainian soil.

I mean the US is pretty much bankrolling this war along with some other NATO countries. It makes more sense to negotiate with the people funding a war than with the people fighting it.
