IMO AI upscalers don't do much better than a sharpening filter. Can't wait until they figure out how to actually make one that reintroduces missing detail, rather than simply enhancing what is already visible.

I'd say they are slightly better as they do a good job if you aren't paying attention. The reality is they need more training, but the law of diminishing returns kicked in long ago, so progress will be slow.

They are amazing for anime tho

There's ongoing work to use AI Gen to introduce "new" details during upscaling. But I assume many will not be interested in something that doesn't recreate real details.
