If instead of doing imperial war, you were tasked with cleaning up the ocean. And in pursuit of cleaning the ocean, you work a 6 hour day 4 days a week. As a reward, a stipend of $20/hr and tuition is free. It'd go further to bringing peace to the world and it'd be hard to say no unless you were really gung ho about building a brand or something capitalist-y.

Unfortunately a lot of people join the national guard thinking they are going to be doing community service stuff domestically like the rest of the world's militaries. Responding to natural disasters, helping the needy citizens that type of thing. Instead they get shipped to some Timbuktu unknown illegal outpost in Syria as cannon fodder for whenever we inevitably piss the region off sufficiently to be used as an excuse for ever more expansion and ching ching for the MIC. It's ok, they'll display their pics on national TV to manufacture consent for the expansion and let their families buy a Gold Star license plate.
