From my own experience, "union shops" tend to become ossified with strict rules regarding who can do what, often at the detriment of things actually getting done in the workplace. Silly things like office workers not being allowed to connect their computer equipment because that's IT's job, but IT is booked until next week... I understand where that's coming from, but the net effect is a huge bureaucratic heaviness that's detrimental to everyone. Also, high performers can't be properly rewarded with a higher salary because everything's related to seniority and nothing else.

I think it's a very good thing we're looking at modernizing labour movements, and I believe special care should be taken to address these kinds of issues.
