It's not really all that common, I think only like 30 cities actually have their own official flags.

Seems like there between 1-5 per state on average with some big outliers so probably ~200 however

This list also includes flags of towns, consolidated city-counties, villages, municipalities, and unincorporated areas, in addition to de jure cities.

and there are many in that list that are historical and not current. I'll admit there's mroe than 30 but it still isn't all that prevalent, there are almost 20,000 towns, city-counties, villages etc.

It's also a very incomplete list. Less significant towns are left off of it. As a little experiment, I web searched like 10 tiny cities near me, and 8 of them had flags. Some of them were shitty and just slapped their seal on them but that still counts because they fly it at city hall.
