I linked NHK, basically the Japanese news source that also publishes in English. However, if you want a lot more context from the case, you can read the Crunchyroll article here that has a lot of background for the case.

Oh yeah, japan has the death penalty...

While I don't support the death penalty as a judicial measure, as it's a punishment which cannot be taken back if it ever lands on the wrong person (as it in history has done many times).

That atrocity is definitely a crime where it would be warranted, were an infallible justice system possible.

That would be Singapore, scratch the fancy surface and there's not much underneath. Japan is more nuanced and vast, runs much deeper in so many ways.
