Yeah, its one in a series of decisions in the chain of events, i don't think his actions were the most consequential in the end.

What i did think was, if this was the person that didn't have the binoculars? Wasn't a pair lost? So a variation on your theme, would it be worse to not know if you'd lost them when you were drunk, or know you'd lost them.
