Scientists have uncovered why many women experience morning sickness during pregnancy, raising the prospects of a cure for the condition.

The study revealed that a hormone produced by the foetus is the trigger for nausea and vomiting in pregnancy, which in extreme cases can require hospital treatment. Crucially, women who have naturally low levels of the hormone prior to pregnancy tend to be more sensitive to the surge of the hormone, called GDF15, in the first trimester, the research suggests.

“We now know that women get sick during pregnancy when they are exposed to higher levels of the hormone GDF15 than they are used to,” said Marlena Fejzo, a clinical assistant professor of population and public health sciences at the University of Southern California’s Keck School of Medicine, who is the paper’s first author.

Okay but before fucking with it maybe figure out why the fetus is producing it in such high quantities? It’s not mentioned why or at least that I saw. Don’t need any birth defects from treating morning sickness

Sounds like the main plan is going the other way, for the women who have low levels of the hormone, they want to try to prime them before they try to get pregnant. Slowly increasing their levels of that hormone until they are used to the amount that will suddenly be produced during pregnancy.

Seems like there could still be side effects. By having a lot of it available, the fetus might produce less, or there might be not enough or too much at certain times. Though, I'm sure they'll have to test all of that carefully.

They would likely be stopping them at common pre-pregnancy levels, since people used to that level don't get much morning sickness when it rises to pregnancy levels. It's only people that are exceptionally low in it where they get the extreme version of morning sickness that threatens their life.

Despite what the headline implies, this would not be used for people at normal levels to avoid mild morning sickness.

Other women have more. They aren't jacking their numbers up abnormally, just bringing them in line with others
