Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:

Here in Utah, our esteemed legislature has been working to overturn EPA regulations and to allow all national parks to be sold for oil and gas mining. In fact, they are working to remove all native american rights to any land, so they can use it for oil and gas production.

I do see how some areas are starting to implement other alternatives, but I don't see any real decrease in the greed that drives oil and gas production in the bigger picture.

I'm aware that some places are trying to do real damage. The huge drop in the costs of wind and solar, combined with improvements in the technologies for electrification mean that there are now powerful economic incentives to get off fossil fuels. Those are going to limit their use going forward.

Many of my neighbors have gone solar. We would, but we're probably selling our home soon so it wouldn't really make sense for us. I'm very interested in wind farms and seeing how well they do, it's a very promising realm. I do actually look forward to a healthier future, but we won't get it here in Utah.

Also they're opening a huge polluting port for diesel trucks all over the valley, and with our lakebed drying up and spreading more arsenic in the air here, I don't know how much longer Utah is even going to be a livable place. Most people here already suffer with asthma and bronchitis year round.
