Can anyone ID the book? Just curious
Greenmantle by John Buchan. His best known novel was The 39 Steps.

Was that the one made into a movie with Robert Donat or whoever, and in one scene he sticks his finger up at the audience but there's no finger?
At least, I think that's how that part went in The Catcher in the Rye when Holden describes going to the movies with Phoebe.
It is! And it was directed by a very young Alfred Hitchcock! There are 5 novels featuring the character Richard Hannay. 39 Steps is the first, Greenmantle is the second. They were very popular in their day. 39 Steps is the only one made into a movie though?
