Yeah, and fucking Machiavelli was somehow one of the main Assassins. The lore honestly makes no sense.

They even imply that "The Prince" was actually about Ezio instead of Cesare Borgia (who's the comical bad guy in Brotherhood).

It does seem like being a Templar doesn't make you pure evil though, like Keynes and Stalin were likely of the group that wanted to use the alien tech to bring about world peace. That's apparently a big internal power struggle in the game. Between the Templars that want to use the power to end war and advance humanity (Copernicus I think is shown to be explicitly this) and the ones that use it exclusively for personal gain (Borgias).

The Assassins aren't necessarily the good guys, they're only really good when they're fighting Templars that are using the pieces of Eden for world domination purposes.
