I currently have a MacBook Pro I got in 2019 that I used for school and now work. It’s starting to run slower and doesn’t hold its battery that well, so I’m considering getting a new computer.
I’ve also seen the Airs but never really understood the difference, and it seems some say they’re better for most people.
Because I use my computer for personal and work reasons, it gets a lot of use. I tend to have many tabs open, for example, with spreadsheets, google docs, and other pages for work open. And then I may open a new window and do personal stuff like plan trips, watch videos, stream shows, etc.
Because my current computer gets overwhelmed with lots of stuff going on and it has 8 gigabytes of memory, I was considering getting 16 gigabytes, but I wonder if it’s actually a memory issue and not just part of my computer aging?
Evidently, I’m not well read in computer specs and I’m wondering generally if folks think a new Air would suffice for me over a Pro?
I have a probably unwarranted mental bias that Pros must be much better, but I have no knowledge to back up that thought. But I wonder, for example, if there’s a big difference between the M1 vs M2 vs M3 chips. My bias would be to get the latest M3 in a pro since I hope to have this computer for 5+ years, though I’d rather optimize for budget if the differences are trivial.
One other small note, my job occasionally requires that I do some very, very basic video editing, but this is infrequent.
I appreciate any help!
I think that a used / refurbished M1 MacBook Air would suit your needs.

It's like an iPad in many ways. Small, light, and portable, with no moving parts. But unlike an iPad, it is not crippled by a shitty touch-based operating system; it's a real computer.
The speed difference between Intel-based Macs and Apple Silicon is DRAMATIC. But I think you will find that the difference between M1, M2, and M3 Macs is... negligible.
Finally, I prefer the 'subtle wedge' design of the 2020 M1 MacBook Airs over the new design. But that is purely aesthetic, and you may disagree.
