No surround sound when atmos is enabled. (alien.top)

I have downloaded the surround sound test app. When using atmos I only get stereo, when forcing it to Dolby 5.1 it works. I have no idea why. I am using a Sony STR-DH590 as my receiver. I have it set to direct.

Is there something I am missing?

Sony does not show that AVR as having Atmos support. If you are using ARC you may end up with only stereo being sent to your AVR. ARC does not support multichannel PCM so your TV may send 2 channel PCM instead.

PL II MV or HD D.C.S will better for TV shows and movies.

I am using Arc. When I said it to Dolby 5.1 on the appleTV it works and uses surround sound. Is there a better way to hook it up other than ark?

Dolby Digital 5.1 works over ARC. Since you only have a 5.1 AVR that does not support Atmos using Dolby Digital 5.1 over ARC is fine.
