If Bloody Spud Shed can handle a 10c container program on their $1 water bottles, I'm sure wine makers can absorb 10c somewhere. Their margins aren't that tight.
Even if it did drive up prices: It'd be for everyone. Every winemaker is going up 10c, that doesn't change the playing field at all.
You don't need two labels. A single label that goes around the whole bottle gives you ample room to retain your present branding, as well as including the barcodes etc required to meet the standard.
This one is fair. I wouldn't argue against a grace period as these producers adapted to the 21st century. Everyone else got that chance, after all.
In all seriousness the winemakers complaints feel a bit thin.
Although, assuming they go two labels, that basically doubles your labelling costs; and a single label might be cheaper to print, but more unwieldy to attach, especially by hand.
The only other thing I'd say in favour of the wine maker is, they are price takers, especially the small ones. They shouldn't be setting a price based on their costs, their price should be set by what they expect the customers will pay. Only then taking their costs into account. So their margins might be less manoeuvrable than we might imagine at a first glance.
Adapting to the 21st Century? Someone better check those labels for rogue Y2K!
