So, I don't have tons of money to spend on a homelab but I want to keep up my skills I've picked up in school and improve. Ideally a couple of switches and routers and firewalls and a server or two or maybe some zima boards will cost at least 500, but I have a beefy laptop. I'm talking 64 Gb ram, 4 tb ssd, and a 13th gen i7. Is it worth getting all this physical equipment when I can set most if not all the stuff I want up in gns3?

GNS3, EVE-NG, and/or Containerlab would be best IMO, you can build out large toplogies.

For like $400ish you can get a older Dell Workstation with 2 x Xeon 8 Core, 256GB RAM -- https://pcserverandparts.com/build-your-own-custom-dell-precision-t5600-workstation/
