I really don't understand why the focus is on imitation stone so much, it has the same issues as most other stones

It is found in many rocks, such as granite, sandstone, gneiss and slate, and in some metallic ores. Silica can be a main component of sand. It can also be in soil, mortar, plaster, and shingles. The cutting, breaking, crushing, drilling, grinding, or abrasive blasting of these materials may produce fine to ultra fine airborne silica dust.

Imitation stone can have twice the amount of silica as granite but it's still an issue

Twice the amount, and the industry is lacking in safety standards. Yes granite is bad, and any silica exposure is bad. The problem is that imitation stone is cheaper and the companies selling it just don't care about the health and safety of the laborers tasked with cutting it.
