I think they realized that they can't really do what they originally set out to do in the Frankenstein engine they built, but they can just keep adding small features.
This is feature creep as a goal now, because they can't actually build a fun space game with the tools they've spent a decade developing due to Chris's focus on "fidelity" above functionality.
