I've worn milsurp all my life and never felt any judgement or got any comments, even from my veteran friends and family. The main controversy (in my experience) comes from behavior and how the pieces are worn. If you go out in a full Desert Storm BDU suit and boots, you'll be projecting a much different image than just wearing some combat boots with jeans. I disagree with the author's take on clothing with soldier names on it. While I don't think it's always disrespectful to wear such clothes, I think that the names and badges look tacky and never add to the look of the outfit, speaking purely in terms of style.
