Viet Cong shot down my Grandpa's helicopter 5 times (may have been north Vietnam). Helicopters are death traps. He said he begrudgingly respects their fighting abilities.

He refuses to fly helicopters. After he got discharged because he kinda lost it (got he shakes), he became an airplane pilot. Loves planes, but hates helicopters. Told me to never get into a helicopter. He learned his lesson.

You could smoke on planes then so I'm kinda not sure if there was a vetting process.

to this very day it's illegal to not smoke while flying on Cubana de Aviación flights, those sweet ass, roomy as hell soviet airliners all still have the original ash tray
