Jacob Hersant had walked free from a courtroom at the Supreme Court of Victoria on Friday after avoiding additional jail time over an attack on a group of hikers in regional Victoria in 2021. As he walked out of court, alongside fellow right-wing extremist Thomas Sewell, Hersant turned to media and said "heil Hitler" before raising his right arm at a slight angle.

I think that guy might be slightly aligned to the right

I just can't fathom what would prompt someone to be so daft.

It's as though he doesn't really understand the ideas he's playing around with, like it's just a game.

He was emboldened by being let off with a slap on the wrist after doing what he did to those hikers.

He thought “there will be a media presence when I leave court, I might as well get more exposure for my demented cause by doing something outrageously offensive”.
