She calls me from work freaking out claiming that apple prompted her to change her 6 digit passcode to access the phone. She says she forgot it and is now locked out for several hours.

I have never heard of this before. And I would just like if someone could confirm if you are ever prompted to change your numeral digit passcode for any reason.

Is her phone enrolled at work? Check if the IT dept can reset her pin. If it's personal with no work management probably reset is the next option
