On this day in 1959, Congolese residents of Stanleyville rebelled against Belgian colonizers, demanding independence after a speech by Patrice Lumumba. Police suppressed the riot, killing ~70, imposing martial law, and arresting Lumumba.

The day prior, Lumumba called for a nationwide campaign of civil disobedience in a speech to the MNC congress, also ordering Congolese people to not collaborate with the Belgian colonial government and announcing that the party would not take part in the upcoming December elections.

The rebellion began on October 30th when the police arrived at the suburb of Mangoba to arrest Lumumba. The uprising was suppressed with military force, including two companies of infantry.

In total, approximately 70 people were killed in the fighting, and up to 200 were wounded. Lumumba himself was arrested by police as the government imposed martial law and banned gatherings of more than five people.

Congo would achieve independence from Belgium on June 30th, 1960, with Lumumba serving as its first Prime Minister. He was assassinated by Belgian forces and their collaborators on January 17th, 1961.

Does anyone keep tabs on Uganda?

It’s a long shot but surely some newshound on this forum can give me some insight.

I recently saw a documentary about Bobi Wine, the most popular opposition leader who is a charismatic musician who rose from “the ghetto” of Uganda, gained a platform with his music, challenges the president who has been in power since 1986, gets severely beaten and has many of his staff arrested, beaten and killed.

The guy keeps getting arrested on pretty flimsy stuff eg political rallies that were broken up by the police due to COVID regulations.

He lost the recent election in which he saw his house surrounded by the military and military helicopters were harassing him. He left the country but then returned at the start of October and was then arrested again, he’s currently under house arrest.

The documentary was moving. It paints a picture of a millennial social media era revolutionary using music and social networks to organize resistance against a militaristic dictatorship with a pretense of democracy.

I don’t know anything about the topic and the documentary was one-sided towards him. It was basically political advocacy to try to raise awareness of his struggle.

Which makes me suspicious it’s some CIA shit. What’s the deal?

Or maybe the existing President is the plant and this documentary is some double game where the state department run the country with one hand while the CIA organize resistance with the other?

Or maybe the documentary is legitimate and his struggle is worth supporting somehow?

I need to learn more and I’ll research more to understand what’s going on in Uganda but can anyone here give me some leads or background?

https://covertactionmagazine.com/2022/05/19/international-court-of-justice-ruled-that-uganda-must-pay-325-million-in-reparations-to-the-democratic-republic-of-congo-but-what-about-u-s-and-uk/

This makes the current president who replaced the former socialist prez in a violent overthrow is an empire stooge who has been plundering Congo since the third world war in Congo and massacring Iturians.

I see north kivu borders Uganda and you hear about a lot of violence in north kivu, where the Rwandan and Ugandan armies have worked together to take control of this part of Congo.

It’s also where vicious warlords operate some of whom seem to have been state department or cia creations.

This is all pro-Bobi background but it’s also fairly ancient history now mostly relating the Bill Clinton era, albeit with the legacy and crimes of that period continuing.

Also Bobi’s music is a real jam.
