That makes sense, pre-toothpaste it's hard to see kissing as anything other than a power move, no one wants to be that close to your gross ass mouth old man
toothpaste and brushes are really old lol. and while most formulations probably didn't help teeth like modern ones they'd certainly fix smelly mouths & shit caught in teeth.
before proliferation of sugars/smoking it was a lot easier to take care of teeth anyway
