Canada being the 2nd largest country in the world means laying claim to a lot of territory that wasn't originally theirs, native rights are a problem for the governments of countries founded by colonialism. I think Trudeau and many Canadians have done a lot of acknowledging. I'm not sure how much that helps when many reserves which Indigenous tribes have been forcibly relocated to receive 2nd class care.
Back to the topic at hand: For any mining project, there should be due consideration and care for the Indigenous that live in that area, and they should also be entitled to a portion of the benefits from that resource extraction.
At least within Canada, our government can be held to account with what we do here. It's when companies registered in Canada wreck havoc on other nations, we can't hold them accountable as well because of the lax rules, and exploited workers in those nations have little to no say about it to change our laws.
I agree that it should be easier to hold companies accountable within Canada, unfortunately we don't even do a good job of that. Our government encourages bad practices, and even uses public funds to clean up after the companies instead of making them pay for it. Of course, abuses these companies do abroad are even worse. I think the whole industry should be nationalized and held to a much higher standard.
