I love it because it's highbrow Comic Sans, when you want something that feels special but is entirely meaningless

Why is the font so well known? Was it popular before the skit or did the skit popularize the word?

I never heard of the font until I entered this thread.

If you're using Microsoft Office, it's one of the old-timey looking fonts. Tons of soccer moms created a bazillion flyers and posters using this font.

It's a Linotype font and they are one of the most widely used suppliers of fonts and typefaces since before computers. It's also been included with Microsoft Word since I was a child, so it's widely available.

Similar to how there is a memetic hatred of Comic Sans (YouTube link), there is a similar one to Papyrus.

And then of course, to freeze-gamer Papyrus was made famous by the character in Undertale by the name Papyrus (whose dialogue boxes use the font).
