Nope. Part of the costume. It was a Sherlock special they did where instead of having it take place in the 21st century they threw it back to the late 1800s.

So they took a modern adaption (that really suffers due to being a modern adaption) and set an episode in the timeframe where the original was set?

Yes ans that's interesting indeed. Especially for the plot twist with the war (or battle?) "they have to loose". A good episode. Like all the serie.
