Everyone sees the serious health problems veterans have. People see that the government has entirely abandoned them and the VA doesn't even do effective suicide prevention. Why the fuck would anyone join except ideology?

Pay (considering you have little to no bills while enlisted) is quite good, more time off than most jobs, propaganda, and also a longing to belong to some sort of group since capitalism has made everybody extremely isolated. Oh and having little "marketable" skills kinda makes your future look bleak.
