A big test of whether privately owned high-speed passenger train service can prosper in the United States has launched. Florida's Brightline runs trains between Miami and Orlando. Stops along the route include Fort Lauderdale, Aventura, Boca Raton and West Palm Beach.

Fun fact! Florida passed a constitutional amendment in the 90s to build high speed rail throughout the state. And then the Florida government just went “Nah, don’t feel like it.” and not a single foot of track was ever laid.

No one got in trouble for this, in 2004 it was cancelled, and in 2018 it was removed in another constitutional amendment vote to “Repeal Prohibition on Aliens' Property Ownership, Delete Obsolete Provision on High-Speed Rail, and Repeal of Criminal Statutes' Effect on Prosecution” because those are obviously related issues.
