that would have been gundam wing, which was also an alternate continuity and together with g gundam were the two that were most popular on toonami. i haven't seen either, but i gather they aren't too indicative of the broader franchise outside some of the aesthetics*, which is why i didn't mention them. but i know they both have a lot of fans in the west especially, so could also be decent places to start
*elaborating on what i mean
from what i've heard g gundam is about a tournament of martial artist gundams from around the world fighting to get power for their countries, while wing is a very campy take on more traditional gundam political story that is more focused on melodrama than the rest of the franchiseThanks for that information. I never really got into gundam wing the way my friend did.
In fact i thought they were all called gundam wing, I assumed it was shortened to gundam.
Wing is just the title of one of its titular suits (many gundam seasons are named after the titular suit, but not all)
The definition of what a gundam is depends on the shows universe(it differs). The general term for robots in the series are Mobile Suits, and some mobile suits are gundams (but not the opposite)
