I’ve slays wanted to get into this show. I never made the time for it.

it's really good, would absolutely recommend. the best way to start it is probably is to just watch the 1979 original show, but other good ones include iron blooded orphans and gundam x*. the later two are completely alternate continuities that require no real prior knowledge, though obviously they build on and play with tropes and conventions from previous works in ways that may have more meaning if you're familiar with them

*00 seems good but i'm still early in so it may go off the rails

Thanks for this info. I remember watching something on toonami with a friend and I thought it looked so cool. Maybe Gundam Wing X? Is that a thing?

When I have some more time, I’d like to sink into this series.

In the US. Gundam aired on Toonami in the order of Wing, G, MSG, Seed.

Wing has a lot of western nostalgia (despite how bad the show actually is IMO). G is campy fun, despite how ignorantly racist it unintentionally is.

Gundam as a franchise is essentially broken up into two categories, UC (universal century, which consists of several seasons. Ovas, movies and content over the 40 years) and AU (alternate universe, standalone series that are shorter and only thematically is similar to gundam). Generally is good to test the water with an AU, and decide after if you want to quit, watch other AUs, or attempt to dive into the Universal Century.

that would have been gundam wing, which was also an alternate continuity and together with g gundam were the two that were most popular on toonami. i haven't seen either, but i gather they aren't too indicative of the broader franchise outside some of the aesthetics*, which is why i didn't mention them. but i know they both have a lot of fans in the west especially, so could also be decent places to start

*elaborating on what i meanfrom what i've heard g gundam is about a tournament of martial artist gundams from around the world fighting to get power for their countries, while wing is a very campy take on more traditional gundam political story that is more focused on melodrama than the rest of the franchise

Thanks for that information. I never really got into gundam wing the way my friend did.

In fact i thought they were all called gundam wing, I assumed it was shortened to gundam.

Wing is just the title of one of its titular suits (many gundam seasons are named after the titular suit, but not all)

The definition of what a gundam is depends on the shows universe(it differs). The general term for robots in the series are Mobile Suits, and some mobile suits are gundams (but not the opposite)
