Leonard Peltier, born on this day in 1944, is an indigenous rights activist of Lakota descent who has been imprisoned by the U.S. since 1977, convicted of first-degree murder following the killing of two FBI agents.

After being extradited from Canada through a false witness statement, Peltier was convicted in a controversial 1977 trial and sentenced to two consecutive terms of life imprisonment for the murder of two Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents in a shooting on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota.

As detailed by "In the Spirit of Crazy Horse", Peltier's trials and conviction are considered highly controversial, and groups such as Amnesty International have raised concerns about their fairness.

On January 18th, 2017, the Office of the Pardon Attorney announced that President Barack Obama had denied Peltier's application for clemency.

"You must understand...I am ordinary. Painfully ordinary. This isn't modesty. This is fact. Maybe you're ordinary, too. If so, I honor your ordinariness, your humanness, your spirituality. I hope you will honor mine. That ordinariness is our bond, you and I. We are ordinary. We are human. The Creator made us this way. Imperfect. Inadequate. Ordinary."

what exactly is the west's endgame for ukraine? I mean, I know they have this massive privatization plan for the future, but are they just going to keep the war going indefinitely in the meantime? Just continue supplying them to no end?

The conflict in Ukraine serves multiple purposes, especially for the US.

It's a new opportunity to deploy and field-test military tech in live conditions.

It's a way of funneling huge amounts of cash through the military-industrial complex and a way of spooling up production in the lead up to what I'm assuming is the coming war on China.

It serves a similar effect on the EU as Operation Gladio by pushing the Overton Window to the right while galvanising the NATO axis and expanding the reach of NATO.

It provided an opportunity for the US to seriously hamper the most productive economies in the EU, especially Germany, in particular by forcing their hand on energy imports and thus it serves to keep countries like Germany from becoming too economically powerful to the point that they could pose a threat to the US economy as it declines.

I suspect that we won't see peace in the Ukraine for a 5-10 years unless something changes drastically such as the Ukraine running out of troops or a big political backlash domestically or internationally. Or Putin deciding that he has achieved his military goals/that proceeding with the war is too costly politically or economically. Or someone like Zelensky or Putin gets couped. That sort of thing. There's always the likelihood of wildcard events that crop up which are extremely difficult to account for but from my (armchair expert) position it seems like it's just going to be a meat grinder for the foreseeable future.

All the other industrialists circling around the fresh kill, waiting for the military industry to finish having its fill

at this point i think it's about saving face as much as anything else.
